Here’s How to Find Out:
With the growing interest in renewable energy, you might be asking yourself, “Is solar energy right for my home or business?” At Maverick Alternative Energy, we’ve simplified the process for you. In this guide, we’ll help you calculate the value and ROI of solar energy without hours of research. By the end of this article, you’ll have a clear understanding of whether solar is the right solution for your needs.
Do You Own Your Home, or Are You Renting?
If you’re renting, installing solar panels might not be the best choice. Landlords may not appreciate modifications to their property, and even if they did, they’d be the ones reaping the financial benefits of reduced energy bills. If you’re a homeowner, however, you’re in an ideal position to capitalize on the long-term value of solar.
Is There Sun Where You Live?
Unless you live underground or in a cave, the answer is most likely “yes!” Even in Canada’s colder climates. Did you know that the efficiency of a solar module increases in lower temperatures?
As Ecoflow.com explains, “In hot environments, PV panels tend to be less efficient due to the negative impact of high temperatures on the performance of PV cells. As the temperature rises, the output voltage of a solar panel decreases, leading to reduced power generation. For every degree Celsius above 25°C (77°F), a solar panel’s efficiency typically declines by 0.3% to 0.5%.”
Even in places like the Arctic, where sunlight can be scarce for part of the year, solar energy can still be viable due to longer daylight hours in summer and the sun’s proximity during that time.
How Much Sun Does Your Roof Receive?
Everyone loves a large tree that provides plenty of shade during the summer, but too much shade can reduce the effectiveness of solar panels. While the sun’s position changes throughout the day, if your roof is shaded for more than 50% of the day on average, solar panels may not deliver the power output and returns you’re hoping for.
Calgary enjoys over 330 days of sunlight each year, making it an ideal location for solar energy. Thanks to advancements in solar technology, modern solar panels are more efficient than ever. With increased bypass diodes and more solar cells in each module, shading has less of an impact on energy production, allowing your system to generate more power even in partially shaded conditions.
The Age and Slope of Your Roof
Solar systems typically perform best on south-facing roofs (in the northern hemisphere) with a slope between 15-40 degrees. East-facing roofs can also be effective, while west-facing roofs are the second-best option for Calgary homes. This is because most electricity consumption in Calgary occurs in the evening, when people are more likely to be doing activities such as laundry, cooking, or using appliances like the microwave, stove, and electronics for entertainment.
What Incentives Are Offered in Your Area?
In Calgary, and across Canada, the federal government offers the Canada Greener Homes Grant (ended in March 2024) and the Canada Greener Homes Loan. Many homeowners were able to take advantage of both if they qualified, with the loan offering up to $40,000 at interest rates as low as 0% for 10 years—more than enough to cover the cost of installing solar panels.
Another noteworthy program is the Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP), an innovative financial tool offered by some municipalities in Alberta. CEIP provides both residential and commercial property owners with easy access to financing.
“CEIP covers up to 100% of project costs and allows for convenient repayment through property taxes. The financing can be paid off at any time, with interest rates and terms set by each participating municipality.” – ABmunis.ca
Our neighbors in the United States may wish they had access to these kinds of incentives. While many states offer their own great programs, the only other industry we can think of that offers interest-free loans is the Canada Student Aid program—though with more stipulations and a shorter time frame.
