Solar FAQ

What are the benefits of a grid-tied system?
  • Low risk investment
  • Save on your residential or commercial electrical bills. Savings go back into your pocket.
  • Offset your low production months with higher summer export rates.
  • Hedge against rising electrical prices. The more energy prices increase, the more you save.
  • Produce your own green energy, reducing your carbon footprint and lowers your grid dependence.
  • You are investing in your home and future environment.
  • Brings social awareness among peers and neighbours.
Through the use of solar modules (panels), sunlight is converted into DC power. An inverter or micro-inverter changes that DC power into usable AC power.  This AC power is connected to your main panel and will distribute the generated energy into your home or business.

Grid-tied systems don’t use batteries and a bi-directional meter is installed instead. Any excess energy that is generated by your array will export to the grid for a credit from your retailer. The accumulated credits will act as stored energy and will roll over into lower production months. When your solar isn’t producing enough electricity, you will draw from the grid as you normally would.

While there are less sunlight hours in the winter months, solar modules have shown increased performance due to cooler running temperatures and light reflection from snow. Snow cover can stop the output of your system but a pitched installation and sunny days can shed snow.

Alberta is a great place to invest in solar. Calgary can see over 2400 hours of sunlight compared to Berlin Germany’s 1625 sunlight hours. Long summer days can offset shorter winter days when your system is producing less.

Solar can prove beneficial in many circumstances. Solar works on East and West facing roofs with South being the most optimal direction. With the use of your electrical bill and our expertise, we will design and install a unique system that works for your home.

Most grid-tied PV systems require little to no maintenance. Solar modules can collect dust, debris, animal droppings etc. that can impact system performance, but rain usually solves any issues. Checking the system performance and visually inspecting the array periodically may be needed. We do not recommend climbing on your roof at any time.

Most solar modules come with a 10-year workmanship and 25-year production warranty. Inverters can range from 10 to 25 years production warranty. This can vary depending on manufacturer. Qualified electricians are required to install systems correctly and must uphold all current code standards.

Our systems come with a monitoring platform where you can view the performance of your system at any time from your phone or desktop computer. Our team can view and troubleshoot your system remotely if any issues arise. This reduces unnecessary field services calls saving both time and money.
